Our Story
Journey Online Tutoring is a tutoring service that supports nonprofits that work with youth and adults. We know that the pandemic and other factors have put many roadblocks and challenges in the way of many of the youth and adults you serve and many organizations are already stretched thin.
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Journey Online Tutoring practices proactive, positive, realistic, and motivational academic coaching. We coach the whole student, giving him or her the tools that he or she needs for success in and out of the classroom.
For example, after our coaching sessions a student should have better study skills, increased internal motivation, more confidence, and hope. Parents can also expect that their children are being given the tools to remain excellent, self-motivated students and workers for the rest of their lives.
But we are realistic.
We coach students that they are capable of success, but that they must invest their own time and energy. We hold them accountable for their choices, demonstrating that their personal choices and actions cause them to miss or achieve their goals.
Finally, we consistently bring the meaning of an academic activity to the forefront, because if the "Why" is clear, the "How" becomes much easier.

Luke Hammons has been teaching from the secondary to adult level for over ten years. His career started when he received a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship to teach English in Hamburg, Germany. Since then, he has taught courses online and in person in literature, creative writing, composition, ESL, public speaking, and reading. Currently, he teaches ESL and all Advanced High School Equivalency Courses: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies at the Center for Adult Learning at Front Range Community College in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Luke specializes in teaching students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and mentoring them to success. Besides the reading comprehension, grammar, writing, and test-taking skills he teaches each semester, he is invested in motivating students and working on their goal setting and career planning. It is his wish that each student knows why he or she is in class—that is, the long term objective towards which he or she is striving, thus helping students to find their own path while motivating them to focus on their daily coursework. Some other things Luke has done: For two years, he taught Creative Writing classes to inmates at Airway Heights Corrections Center in Spokane, Washington. Also, he and his wife, Sheila, co-founded and ran a Volunteer Agency, Rio Volunteer, in Rio de Janeiro. This agency put international volunteers into action at schools, orphanages, and other institutions serving impoverished communities in Rio de Janeiro. Luke has his MFA in English Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University and a double major BA in English and German from the University of Puget Sound. He enjoys reading and writing fiction, watching films, traveling, and taking part in outdoor activities in Colorado. |
