Academic Coaching

What  is academic coaching?
Academic coaching is a service designed to help your student get organized, stay on task, and learn the skills they need to be a lifelong learner. We create a month-long plan for all of your child's coursework and provide daily email support and weekly video calls to help your child steadily progress through his or her coursework. Find out more about our academic coaching.

What grades do you coach?
We offer coaching to students grades 6 -12 as well as any students studying for their GED.

What is your coaching and teaching philosophy?
Journey Online Tutoring practices proactive, positive, realistic, and motivational academic coaching and tutoring. We teach the whole student, giving him or her the tools that he or she needs for success in and out of the classroom.

For example, after our coaching sessions a student should have better study skills, increased internal motivation, more confidence, and hope. Parents can also expect that their children are being given the tools to remain excellent, self-motivated students and workers for the rest of their lives.

What will your coaches and tutors do if a student does not do their homework or study?
We coach students that they are capable of success, but that they must invest their own time and energy. We hold them accountable for their choices, demonstrating that their personal choices and actions cause them to miss or achieve their goals.

Finally, we consistently bring the meaning of an academic activity to the forefront, because if the "Why" is clear, the "How" becomes much easier.

Tutoring

What grades do you tutor?
We offer tutoring to students grades 6-12 as well as GED Prep.

For what subjects do you offer tutoring?
We offer tutoring for nearly every subject, including, but not limited to: Math, Science, Language Arts, History, Business and Foreign Language (Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German).

What are your tutors' credentials?
All of our tutors are experienced teachers or tutors who either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

How long are tutoring sessions?
Tutoring sessions are 50 minutes long.

Do tutors provide content or curriculum for the tutoring sessions?
No. All tutoring must be directly linked to a class that the student is taking in school and already using a curriculum provided by a classroom teacher. The tutor's role is to work directly with your child on the specific material or concepts that he or she is struggling with in that class. The tutor may, however, bring in some supplementary outside material to help aid learning, but does not develop original content.

Policies & Procedures

What if my child misses a tutoring or coaching session due to illness?
Especially in this very uncertain time, as parents ourselves, we know that sickness can happen quickly and unexpectedly. Please rest assured that your child's health and safety are our number one priorities. If your child gets sick unexpectedly and is unable to attend a tutoring or coaching session, we simply ask that you communicate with the tutor or coach as soon as you are able. You and the tutor will arrange a time to reschedule the session when your child is well.

Can I choose my child's coach or tutor?
Your child will be assigned a tutor or coach that will best fit his or her needs. If you feel the tutor or coach is not the best fit for your child, we will find a teacher who is right for you.

Getting Started

What are the technical requirements?
You will need a reliable internet connection to be able to sustain the 50 minute video conferences with minimal interruptions. You will need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and audio. We also recommend a headset with a microphone. You and your student will also need to provide an email address for the tutor or coach to communicate with you.

How do I schedule my child's tutoring or coaching sessions?
We will send you a link with your coach's availability and ask to you choose the times that work for you and your child's schedule.

Do you offer any discounts?
Yes we do! We offer seasonal discounts as well as discounts for successful referrals, multiple students, and combining services, and more. See our Terms of Service for details.
